Overview
Turpan Museum was built in 1965 with an area of 17,571 square meters and an exhibition area of 4,278 square meters. Turpan is known as one of the richest open-air archaeological museums in the world. More than 80% of the cultural relics from the Western Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum are from Turpan.
History of Turpan Museum
Turpan Museum was first completed in 1989, located in the most prosperous street, Gaochang Road. The new one moved to 1268 Munaer Road. The construction project launched in 2006 and completed three years later. It houses more than 5,000 artifacts displaying the charming history of Turpan. In the new three-storey building, nearly half of the exhibits are new archaeological discoveries in recent years and never displayed before. Apart from the closely watched archaic mummies, the museum is also famous for many old documents in different languages.
What to see in Turpan Museum
Some historical relics are also displayed in the museum such as "Ancient Mummies Exhibition", showing ancient mummies and their dresses and ornaments survived from the particular climate condition, and "Rhinoceros Exhibition", showing a rhinoceros fossil and a dinosaur fossil of Jurassic Period about 7000-2400 ten thousand years ago.
The giant rhinoceros fossils in the exhibition hall are one of the essential treasures of the Turpan Museum. According to textual research, this is the most complete fossil of giant rhino skeleton unearthed in the world at present.
The exhibition hall of unearthed cultural relics is divided into the Stone Age, Jushi Period, Gaochang County, Gaochang Kingdom, Xizhou of Tang Dynasty and Uighur Gao Chang to name just a few. These archeological objects fully reflect the social and historical development process and cultural achievements of Turpan.
