Sangke Grassland

Overview
Sangke Grassland is located in the west of Xiahe County and south of Gansu Province. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations when people travel to Xiahe. There are hills and countryside with grassland. When you come to the Sangke Grassland, you can rent horses and ride in the local area and experience Tibetan traditional folk customs, such as Zanba, butter tea and Guozhuang dance. In addition, every summer there are festivals, such as the Xianglang Festival, on the grassland. In the evening, herdsmen often sing together and perform the Guozhuang dance. The families you stay with often hold such activities as well. If you are lucky enough, join them to experience the joyous grassland style!

What to do in Sangke Grassland
When you travel to Sangke Grassland, you can experience lots of interesting activities, such as horse riding, rent horses and ride in the local area and experience Tibetan traditional folk customs, such as Zanba, butter tea and Guozhuang dance. During the summer, there are festivals such as The Xianglang Festival has many traditions that involve games, ceremonies, singing, and dancing. “Xianglang” can be translated into “picking the firewood” in Tibetan; every June, the monks from Labrang Monastery will collect firewood and head back to the fields reunite with their families. The festivities usually begin on June 6 of the lunar calendar and is a must-attend for those wishing to experience the jubilant grassland lifestyle with the locals.

How to get there: You can take buses from the parking lot of Labrang Monastery to Sangke Township, it costs 3 yuan per person, and it takes about 8-10 people to depart. The chartered car costs about 60 yuan, and the journey takes 15 minutes. After getting off, go straight along the road.

Travel Tips
1. Please ask for a permission to access parts of the grasslands, especially the areas surrounded by barbed wires. These are private properties and may require pre-arranged payment before entrance.
2. Know the cost for the optional activities, such as participating in bonfire evenings, events, and other activities and meals.
3. The best time to visit Sangke Grassland is during summer time, do be aware of the browning fields and colder weather during other months.
