General Introduction: 
Xi'an ancient city wall, also known as Xi'an Ming Dynasty wall, is the largest and most complete ancient city wall in China. With a total length of 13.7km, it was built in 1370 and completed in 1378. According to statistics, in the history of the city wall, large-scale repairs have been carried out in five different periods: Sui and Tang Dynasties, the last year of Tang Dynasty, Song and Yuan Dynasties, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and 1980. History of Ancient City Wall

Background
In the early Sui Dynasty, Yang Jian, the first emperor, lived in Chang'an city of Han Dynasty. At that time, Chang'an city of Han Dynasty was small and dilapidated, with serious water pollution, so he decided to build another new city in the southeast direction, named Daxing palace.

In 582 A.D., the construction of Daxing city started. Under the leadership of the third emperor, Sui Yangdi, 100000 people completed the Imperial Palace and city in only nine months.

In 613 ad, the scope of the imperial city gradually expanded. The outer wall was built in the periphery, and the pattern of the city was basically formed. Until Tang Dynasty, it was still inherited and used.

In the Tang Dynasty, the outer wall was seriously damaged due to the long-term war. Han Jian, the emperor at that time, organized to repair the inner city wall and narrow the scope of the imperial city.

In the early Ming Dynasty, under the guidance of a recluse, Zhu Yuanzhang made a drastic transformation of Chang'an city. And changed its name to "Xi'an City", which is the beginning of Xi'an getting its name.

The Structure of the Ancient City Wall
Xi'an city wall is built around the "defense" strategic system. The thickness of the city wall is greater than the height, and it is as stable as a mountain. This is why various large-scale activities can be held in the ancient city of Xi'an, such as marathon and cycling. The height of the wall is 12M, the top width is 12-14m, the bottom width is 15-18m, and the perimeter is 13.74km. There are four main city gates: East Changle gate, Xi'an dingmen, South Yongning gate and North Anyuan gate.

The city wall includes a series of military facilities such as moat, drawbridge, gate tower, arrow tower, main tower, turret, enemy tower, parapet, crenel, etc. Xi'an city wall is very defensive, the moat outside the city is the first line of defense. There is a suspension bridge on the river, which is the only way in and out. The suspension bridge falls on both sides of the moat during the day for people to access. At night, the suspension bridge rises in the air, cutting off the road to the city.

Xi'an City Wall International Marathon
Xi'an City Wall International Marathon is a marathon event held on the ancient city walls. Since 1993, Xi'an City Wall International Marathon has created the image of "culture + tourism + sports" With its simple and heavy walls and majestic archery towers, runners can travel between history and reality and appreciate the charm of the ancient city wall along the way. Marathon runners only feel this way in Xi'an.

Routes:
Xi'an City Wall International Marathon is divided into three projects: Half Marathon, 13.7km round the city run, and 5km healthy run. The project starts from 200m to the east of Yongningmen gate, and passes through Wenchang gate-Heping gate-Changle gate-Chaoyang gate-Jiefang gate-Anyuan gate-Shangwu gate-Yuxiang gate-Anding gate-Hanguang gate-West terminal of Yongningmen tower, with a total length of 13.7km. (Note: On March 10, 2020, the Organizing Committee of Xi'an City Wall International Marathon announced the postponement of 2020 City Wall International Marathon.)

Xi'an City Wall National Kite Festival
Spring is a good season for flying kites. The theme is: “welcome the spring”. The national Kite Festival is held on the ancient city wall of Xi'an in early April every year. The activity lasts for one week. All citizens and tourists can go to the South Gate of the city wall to make their own favorite kites, and finally fly them on the wall.
