Generally May-October is the better time to travel Dunhuang. Early May-late June and mid September-late October are more comfortable without the burning heat of July-September. Fruits also mellow in September-October. Dunhuang is dry throughout the year due to its very inland location and subjected to the big temperature change between day and night. 

By Plane
Dunhuang is located in the northwest of China. Strictly speaking, Air Plane is one of the best means of transportation to Dunhuang. Due to the small area of Dunhuang, there is only one airport-Dunhuang International Airport. At present, only Beijing, Yinchuan, Wuhan, Shanghai, Nanjing, Lanzhou, Jinchang, Zhangye, Xian, Urumqi, Chengdu, Chongqing and Hangzhou have direct flights to Dunhuang. In terms of airlines, Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, Capital Airlines and Huaxia Airlines all have flights. But not all year round. Tourists who choose to fly must pay attention to the real-time flight information.

By Train
There are two railway stations in Dunhuang-Dunhuang Railway Station and Liuyuan South Railway Station. Due to the fact that it is not as densely populated as the cities in the east of China, the trains to Dunhuang railway station are very limited. Most tourists will choose to go to Lanzhou by train or plane first, then transfer to Dunhuang. This is the most convenient way.

By Bus
Dunhuang bus station has been relocated behind Dunhuang Hotel in 2010. There are buses to Lanzhou, Turpan, Urumqi, Golmud as well as Dunhuang sights like Mingsha Mountain, Crescent Spring.

1). By Bike: icycles can be rented in the local coffee shop. 1 RMB/Hour. Not recommended in summer.
2). By Bus: Some sights near the town can be reached by the public buses like Mogao Grottoes and Mingsha Mountain.
3). By Car: You can rent a car during your trip in Dunhuang, or take a taxi to each attractions, charge by meters.

A windbreaker, a pair of durable and comfortable shoes, a down jacket (better with hat), sunscreen cream, sun block, skin cream and lip balm, sunglasses, medicine for urgent use.

There are many local delicacies in Dunhuang, such as Yellow Noodles with Donkey Meat, Camel Hoof on Silk Road, Stir-fried Hump with Five Shredding, Dunhuang Rang Pi, Quick-frying Hump, Fry Oil Cake,ect.

Dunhuan g is located in Gansu Province in Western China, Xian is located in Shaanxi province. Around 1718km between Dunhuang and Xian city. The best way from Xian to Dunhuang is take the flight. There are 4 direct flights between Xian and Dunhuang every day. It takes about 2.5 hours by air. There is only one train (K367) from Xian to Dunhuang(22Hours).
